Oversee all content for and determine editorial direction of a popular city blog, the 11th site in the Gothamist.com global network of city blogs, which attracts hundreds of thousands of unique visitors and millions of pageviews each month. The Times, Gainesville, Ga. Writer and Columnist. September ‘98-July ‘02. One of three full-time sports writers for daily newspaper located 50 miles northeast of Atlanta and 40 miles northwest of Athens.
Responsibilities included:
• Producing research-heavy enterprise and feature packages for all sections of the newspaper. Click here for links to several stories.
• Writing the popular and award-winning weekly Sporting Life column, a firsthand look at the many — and often unique — recreational activities Georgia has to offer. Activities attempted include skydiving, hang gliding, bull riding, ice climbing, lawn mower racing and nude water volleyball.
• At least one day per week, editing all sports stories and laying out the entire sports section using QuarkXPress.
• Writing the weekly On the Line with Todd McClure column, an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the life of an NFL player. McClure is the starting center for the Atlanta Falcons.
• Reporting on the Olympic hopefuls of the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club and Lake Lanier Rowing Club, legacies of the Atlanta Olympic Games held on Gainesville’s Lake Lanier in 1996.
• Covering recreational sports, high school athletics, the Atlanta Falcons, the Atlanta Braves, the University of Georgia Bulldogs and major events such as the NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships.
• Taking photographs to accompany stories.
Home Improvement Market Magazine, Radnor, Pa. Associate Editor. January ‘97-February ‘98. Member of editorial staff for national monthly trade magazine covering the $140 billion home improvement industry.
Responsibilities included:
• Writing in-depth features and news stories for Home Improvement Market (HIM) and its quarterly supplement Lumber & Building Materials Retailer.
• Covering all industry companies and retailers in the western United States.
• Reporting on trends in specific product categories.
• Researching and writing breaking news stories daily for HIM’s Web site.
• Researching and writing all stories for HIM’s bimonthly international news section.
• Traveling throughout the United States to represent HIM at trade shows and important industry events.
• Generating story ideas for use in all sections of the magazine.
• Taking photographs to accompany articles.
TV Guide, Radnor, Pa. Senior Sports Copy Editor. August ‘96-January ‘97. One of two Senior Sports Copy Editors in the Listings Department of the nation’s number-one weekly magazine.
Responsibilities included:
• Making editorial decisions on content for the publication’s 125-plus editions nationwide.
• Editing and revising sports listings and features for all editions.
• Coordinating the assignments of four writers and two copy editors on sports desk.
• Working with the New York features department in the production of special sports sections, such as the College Bowl Preview.
The Danville News, Danville, Pa. Sports Writer. June ‘91-August’94. Wrote game stories, athlete profiles and sports features for daily newspaper. Also wrote occasionally for the paper’s news and features sections.
Inquiry International, Bloomsburg, Pa. Project Manager. May ‘96-August ‘96. Using PageMaker for Macintosh, produced, edited and designed all texts for small, privately-owned publisher of scholarly books. Titles include: "Multicultural Education in the United States" and "The Multicultural Education Directory."
