i’m back

well, i didn’t really go anywhere. just kind of a mental sabbatical. every time i sat down to write something for the blog … i didn’t.

my mid-autumn malaise can partly — partly — be attributed to three things:

* the new york yankees. i watched nearly every ALCS and world series game during the yanks’ failed postseason run. and i watched these games live, thanks to my new “high-speed” cable internet connection and mlb.com. those 4 am start times really screw up the rest of your day. and yes, my yankees lost. but at least i can now say that the florida marlins have more world series championships than the atlanta braves over the past 10 years.

* i’m taking chinese lessons a couple times a week … and this year i’m actually taking them somewhat seriously. i’m trying something new: studying. this is very necessary, because i’m trying to learn a little reading and writing to go with my speaking. chinese readers, don’t expect to carry on any extensive conversations with me anytime soon. but i can now say things in settings other than taxi cabs, restaurants and black market dvd shops. trying to tackle chinese characters helps the comprehension so much. it really does. i’m reminded of those tacky — no offense brian — posters people used to hang on their walls. (sorry if you still do.) you know, the ones that don’t seem to be of anything until you work up a sweat staring at it. and then you see a shark or a train or something else that looks even uglier than the poster’s original pattern. anyway, i never got one of those damned posters to work. never. but these characters are starting to take shape.

* i turned 30 on halloween. perhaps i was going through what i hope will be at the very most a one-third-life crisis.

or maybe i’m just a lazy, undisciplined, easily distracted professional procrastinator. whatever, i’m over it. and the brain is bubbling again. so expect more activity here immediately.

but really, who the hell cares anyway? it’s just a freakin’ blog. and lately, it seems like 75 percent of the human race has one.

  1. 75% of the human race has gone? the chinese say “there is no endless banquet.” face it, old man!
