it’s real good

good friends. good food. kick-ass southern rock. big-ass tattoos. a newpaper-reading cow. and a statue of a confederate soldier who is really a rough rider from the spanish-american war.

what more could a person ask for from four days in georgia?

click here and you will see:

* friends: barbecue phil, kalli, the members of hawgleg — bradley, chris mac and tom — sarah, megan’s calf, sara and the boat named after her, sue, claire, randall, robin, mr. and mrs. dumbauld, vince and richmond.

* food: the hickory pig has the best barbecue in the world. period. come for the food and stay for, well, more food. but be sure to strike up a conversation with barbecue phil, owner and sole employee (there are only three tables). his tales are topped only by the brunswick stew and pulled pork sandwiches. i made sure this was my first stop in georgia and i stayed there for two-and-a-half hours. his latest fountain of youth? soya lecithin. “i found something that makes my blood pressure go down and my pecker go up,” phil said. “that’s gotta be good.”

also ….

johnny’s barbecue. more mainstream, but as the slogan reads: “it’s real good.” and krispy kreme donuts … mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

* southern rock: “it’s just getting too easy to rock.” so said tom, lead singer of a little band we like to call hawgleg, after their latest ear-splitting performance at gainesville’s monkey barrel. judge for yourself. click here, here and here for three mp3s from an april hawgleg performance. the first song, entitled “shanghai, china,” was written last summer, right before i left the deep south for the far east.

  1. Phil was very excited about seeing his picture and the Pig’s on on the internet. He has been hard to hold him down now. Don’t listen to all his medical expertise. He is prone to exaggerate ever once in a while. But I still love him!!

  2. Attention Hawgleg! Savannah Georgia’s incredible and diverse music scene and night-life thrives for your subversive southern-fried rock ‘n’ roll. Good venues and hungry music fans. act fast.
