aloha means hello and goodbye
Not sure what to announce here: the fact that I’m leaving China … or the fact that I’m coming back.
I’m leaving in five days. I’m coming back in three months. I have signed another one-year contract to teach at Shanghai University.
The original plan was to travel in China until the end of July. But those plans were made before SARS screwed everything up. (However, part of me — the part that has traveled during Spring Festival — thinks that the best time to tour China might actually be during an epidemic.)
Anyway, here are the tentative dates for my 2003 SARS Sucks World Tour (you’ll see that I had some pretty sweet alternatives):
June 2-4: New York City
June 4-10: Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania
June 10-July 2: Honolulu, Hawaii
July 2-5: Washington, DC
July 5-10: Atlanta/Gainesville, Georgia
July 10-August 13: Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania
August 13-20: Bozeman, Montana
August 20-25: Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania
Some of these dates are flexible. And I am open to offers of couches and guest rooms across America.
I’m not really ready to leave Shanghai — I’ve really started to like it here — which I guess is a good thing. That way I’ll be ready to come back.
I’ve already had my first case of reverse culture shock. I went to Malone’s American Cafe (which is kind of an oxymoron) for some pancakes and scrambled eggs. Almost all of the customers were American. I could understand everything that was being said around me.
And I hated it.
The Shanghai Diaries will continue to be updated throughout the summer! Believe me, I have plenty of material.

wow, three weeks in Hawaii sure doesn’t suck. But, you could be in Hangzhou. So maybe you will be bumming! (c: The summer plans looks great. You might get to catch the women’s world cup, since it was moved to the U.S. ……
Tell us the real reason you’re coming back to SH to teach…. can’t find anything better to do in U.S.? :-))
